Facebook Still Discriminating Against The Transgender Community

On the 20TH August 2015 I was sent an email by Facebook to confirm my identity on the Hope Lye Facebook account I have. No problem I thought! I had my name legally changed by a Government department and the other form of ID came from the Natwest Bank.

What more clarity would you need to confirm who you say you are having a Government body and bank to confirm your identity? Not Facebook! They believed the documents to be false. They have insisted I provide an American passport. I insisted this couldn’t happen as I’m a British citizen and not American. I was then told that I would no longer get my account back.

I wasn’t leaving it there so I asked Facebook employee to put me in contact with a manager to sort this out. I explained that I am transgender and changed my ID to said manager. All the documents are legal to my name change and they are documents that Facebook have said on their own advice pages that they are acceptable.

The manager responded by saying the American Government wouldn’t accept them as valid ID so I contacted the American embassy in London to see if this was true. On emailing the documents to the embassy I got a quick reply back saying they are all in order. I then mailed said email to the manager I was dealing with at Facebook.

Silence happened for two hours then all of a sudden an email came through clearly stating they don’t want transgender / transsexual people on Facebook due to religious grounds. Mine would not be the only account they close. They are closing them all down.

Facebook then went onto say they would only accept birth ID given to transgender / transsexual people insisting any legal name changes were fake and would not be accepted as proof of ID.

The communication ended when I said I would be pursuing this through the courts.

24 hours later my Facebook account under my legal name Hope Lye remains closed!

In the past I know Transgender / Transsexuals / Drag Queens have had the same issues. Mark Zuckerberg has admitted they got it wrong and this was changing. These changes have not been made quick enough!

Interestingly the German Facebook regulators have forced Facebook to allow name changes be they legal or pseudonyms and they have had to abide by these changes. If Facebook didn’t abide by German rules they would be blocked by servers. The same should happen with the UK too!

Until such time Facebook will be promoting hate and discrimination of transgender / transsexual people. It’s sad Mark Zuckerberg and co see us as inhuman but allows photos of child abuse, porn and butchered animals on its pages. They also allow paedophiles to operate freely on Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook sure have some strange morals!

Hope DIY

Note: Facebook have in the past few minutes backed down on the Hope Lye account. Don’t know why. They didn’t say. Probably due to the backlash they recieved on twitter and other areas. Thank you to all those that have helped / shown support. However we must work together to make sure they don’t carry on with purging transgender / Transsexuals Facebook.

  1. This is very odd; it conflicts with Facebook’s stated policy on name changes. It could be that the manager in question just made shit up, but I’d be very interested in seeing those emails you received.

  2. Much of this is a tale of an inflexible, insensitive bureaucracy behaving like an inflexible, insensitive bureaucracy. But this bit…

“Silence happened for two hours then all of a sudden an email came through clearly stating they don’t want transgender / transsexual people on Facebook due to religious grounds. Mine would not be the only account they close. They are closing them all down.”

…is extraordinary. Could you please publish that email?

  3. You could check the policy for married names? If I’m allowed to change from being Miss Smith to Mrs Jones when I marry, I’d think you have a clear case of prejudice. If no-one can ever change their name – then you have a clear case of stupidity. Either way the courts should support you.

  4. Thanks for all the comments. The emails will be published in due course while I seek legal action and also wether this is a facebook policy or an over zealous facebook employee. Once that happens the mails will be up here for all to see.
